Framed Winter Scene

I had the joy of my 14 year old daughter staying home with me on Wednesday for “take your kid to work day”. Basically, she got to stamp with me and I got to talk about what I love about Stampin’ Up! with her! It was a delight to work on this As You See It challenge together. I showed her how to use the Sponge Brayer to create a sunset sky and she thought it was very cool when I splattered water on the ink to create white spots that look like snow!

I was going to have her write part of this blog post, as she is quite the wordsmith, but we ran out of time. I’ll have to convince her to write for you another day.

Today’s challenge is a colour combination. I love pinks and greys together, so this was right up my creative alley!

I think these colours are stunning together! So soft and warm. I used the tree stamp from the Campology stamp set. I hadn’t used my new stamp set yet, so I was super excited to have the chance to break it in!

As you probably noticed, I decided that my sunset winter scene would be suitable as a framed piece of artwork. This would still make an amazing card, but I decided to create a 5×7″ art piece that I could display through the winter months.

I used my Sponge Brayer with Petal Pink and Flirty Flamingo ink to create the sunset sky. Then added some wisps of shadowy clouds with a sponge and some Basic Gray ink. I flicked water over this to create the falling snow effect. The trees from my Campology Stamp Set were stamped with Momento Black ink and the trunks were coloured in with a Light Basic Black Blends Marker.

I even added some additional white dots of snow using the Chalk Marker.

This sponged and stamped piece was layered over a thin matte of Whisper White and Basic Gray cardstock and adhered to the Whisper White/Plush Poinsettia Specialty Paper background with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The Petal Pink frame was cut using the Stitched Rectangle Dies and adhered to the Plush Poinsettia Specialty Paper with Foam Adhesive Strips so it would frame the winter scene.

The sentiment from the Itty Bitty Christmas stamp set was stamped on Basic Gray cardstock, then heat embossed with White Embossing Powder and my Heat Tool. I sponged Tuxedo Black Momento Ink over the sentiment to make that white embossing really pop! This was adhere to the front of my artwork with more Stampin’ Dimensionals over a swirl of Linen Thread that I placed on the left side of the sentiment.

The final touch was to tie a double finger bow with the White Crinkle Ribbon and attach it and the Glitter Star Ornament over the swirl of Linen Thread with Glue Dots.

I popped it in a frame over a photo of my son when he was a baby (he was so chubby and smiley!!). When winter is done, I’ll switch the artwork out and put my son’s chubby little grinning face back on display!

Christmas is Family

What brings you joy during the holidays? For me, it’s spending time with my family. I love the time together playing games, opening gifts, sitting by the fireplace, and just existing together.

My card today is inspired by the As You See It Challenge: it’s a fill in the blank!

At first, I wasn’t sure what I would do on a card for this one. How would I depict family on a holiday card?

Then I remembered a stamp set that I got in my pre-order for the upcoming Stampin’ Up! catalogues! “The Gang’s All Meer” stamp set will be available from the Sale-a-bration Brochure in January.

I realized that there are five people in my immediate family and this image has five meerkats!! I saw someone put Santa hats on the critters for a card, so I decided to give it a go!

I stamped the meer cat family on some Whisper White cardstock with Tuxedo Black Momento ink. I used my Stampin’ Blends to colour the image: Light and Dark Crumbcake for the cheerful crew, Dark Balmy Blue, Light Night if Navy, and Dark Night of Navy for the background, and Poppy Parade for the Santa hats.

The Santa hat image is from the Playful Penguins stamp set from Stampin’ Up! I stamped them on Whisper White cardstock, coloured them, then fussy cut them and adhered them to the little heads. The pompom on the end of the hat was cut separately, so I could attach it in different ways to the hats. That way, I could make the hats all a little bit different.

I used the Snowfall Accents Puff Paint to create the falling snow on the background, heat setting it to make that puff paint puff!!

Then I had another thought! Would the meerkats fit in the Stampin’ Up! Shaker Domes? YES, they do!!

Now, I was REALLY excited!!

I used the Snowglobe Scenes dies to cut the hole in the piece of the See a Sillhouette Designer Series Paper by Stampin’ Up!. I used about a teaspoon of pickling salt as snow in my dome and layered my pieces together over the Night of Navy card base and a matte of Gold Glimmer Paper.

The base of the shaker globe is created with Basic Black cardstock, cut with the same die set and my die cutting machine. I also used the Subtle embossing folder to give it some texture. I wrapped a piece of Linen Thread around the base of the globe and secured it on the backside before adhering the globe base to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals. I tucked some leaves under the globe base that I punched out of Garden Green cardstock and a random scrap of Perennial Essence Designer Series Paper. You might also notice the pine bough on the left side, which is a sticker left over from my Christmas Countdown Calendar kit.

Finally, I stamped the sentiment from “The Gang’s All Meer” stamp set in Poppy Parade ink on Crumb Cake cardstock. I flagged the end and tied a Linen Thread bow on it and adhered it over a strip of Real Red cardstock, also flagged on the end.

Toile Tidings

The Stampin’ Up! catalogues are not just catalogues of stamping and art supplies that you can purchase, but they are a great resource for ideas and inspiration! My card design today is one that I copied from the cover of the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Catalogue. I changed out the colours a bit and made some other minor changes, but it’s a copy. And I LOVE it!!

Today’s blog post is also inspired by the As You See It Challenge Blog which challenges participants to create a card using their most used punch or die.

What’s your go-to die or punch?

My favorite is the large 2-1/4″ circle punch from Stampin’ Up! I love how quick and easy it is to use punches instead of a die cutting machine. There are fewer steps to using a punch, which makes it easier and faster to create a card (and especially multiple cards) with a punch, rather than a die.

When I saw the card on the cover of the Stampin’ Up! holiday catalogue, I was immediately drawn to the plaid designer series paper and the square/circle combination with the layers on the card.

Now, I do have nearly all of the products shown on that sample, but I wanted to put my own spin on the design. I started with Real Red cardstock for the card base, then added the 3″ x 5.5″ piece of the red plaid (or is it gingham?) patterned paper from the Toile Tidings Designer Series Paper pack.

Next was to cut a 3-3/4″ square of Very Vanilla cardstock and stamp the wreath image from the Tidings All Around stamp set in Garden Green ink. To this, I stamped multiple berries from the same stamp set using Real Red ink. The square is adhered to the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals. Then I added a piece of the Garden Green 3/8″ Double-Stitched Ribbon, approximately 8.5″ long, folded in half over the wreath image. Mini Glue Dots made attaching the ribbon super easy!

I love how the bow of Linen Thread tied onto the top of the folded ribbon adds an extra touch of a country cottage style. Of course, the circle of Very Vanilla cardstock is created using my favourite 2-1/4″ Circle Punch from Stampin’ Up! First, I stamped the sentiment with Real Red ink onto a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock, then used the punch so that the sentiment would be centered in the circle. This was then attached over the ribbon to the middle of the stamped wreath image with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The final touch was to add the three gold Metallic Pearls around the sentiment.
